The photographs in this gallery have been taken in both the UK and Iceland. Whooper Swans breed in Iceland and then migrate south in the autumn to the UK were they over winter in the milder weather. They travel in family groups and can number in the thousands at places like Martin Mere and Welney in the UK. They are really graceful birds in flight but can be really clumsy when getting airborne, they turn into the wind to gain lift and flap their wings whilst running madly until they break free of the water. Adults are white in colour and juveniles are grey.
