Female Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis)

Kingfishers have to dry themselves after a dive and then preen to make sure their feathers remain waterproofed. If they become waterlogged they might not be able to break free of the water after a dive. Kingfishers often drown this way especially inexperienced juveniles.
